I was extremely eager to get my hands on this sequel. After reading the fabulously addicting Hourglass, I was expecting an epic finale to a unique, romantic series. Unfortunately, my hopes were slowly crushed as I forced myself to keep turning the pages. For me, this book dragged on for ages. The ending, however, did bring me some enjoyment.
Hourglass, the third book in the Evernight series, ended with a HUGE cliff hanger. I absolutely loved the drama and romance of that novel, but it's sequel didn't bring my nearly as much excitement. To be honest, I'm not sure what it was about Afterlife that disappointed me so. Maybe it was the lack of adventure, or the over-the-top romance between Bianca and Lucas. Somehow, the story lost a bit of its originality.
I really am sad to see the series come to an end. I can still remember falling in love with Lucas and Bianca's tragic, Romeo-and-Juliet tale. The captivating tales of blood-thirsty vampires and those who hunt them took me on a wild ride. Looking back, I had no idea where this series would take me. The ending was completely unexpected, and I never would have guessed it when I read Evernight.
Overall, Gray did a fairly good job of wrapping up her complex story. Although I was often frustrated with her characters and the plot, I have to give her kudos for the intricacy of the story. The Evernight Academy series will still have a special place in my heart, even if Afterlife wasn't all that I hoped it would be.
