Review: Shadow Kiss by Richelle Mead

Title: Shadow Kiss
Series: Vampire Academy Series
Book #: Three
Author: Richelle Mead
Published: 2008
Source: Bought
My Rating:

It's springtime at St. Vladimir's Academy, and Rose Hathaway is this close to graduation. Since making her first Strigoi kills, Rose hasn't been feeling quite right. She's having dark thoughts, behaving erratically, and worst of all... might be seeing ghosts.

As Rose questions her sanity, new complications arise. Lissa has begun experimenting with her magic once more, their enemy Victor Dashkov might be set free, and Rose's forbidden relationship with Dimitri is starting to heat up again. But when a deadly threat no one saw coming changes their entire world, Rose must put her own life on the line--and choose between the two people she loves most.(taken from goodreads.com)

For some reason, I just cannot seem to finish this series! And trust me, it isn't for lack of trying. It just seems that books for review keep getting in the way. However, after the ending in this third novel, I'll be racing to finish the fourth book. I mean, what kind of ending is that?! Those of you who've read Shadow Kiss will know what I'm talking about. What a cliff-hanger.

This series truly does improve with every installment. Mead's plot and characters continue to grow stronger as she weaves a tale full of powerful Moroi and their intimidating, dangerous guardians known as dhampirs. What I wouldn't give to be a dhmapir. While most of society longs to become pale-skinned and ultra beautiful, I'd rather learn how to kick some Strigoi butt. During every fight scene, I LOVED how Rose held her own and took out so many of her opponents. Heroines who sit in the corner cowering always get me riled up, and I adored Rose's extreme bravery and wicked fighting skills.

Instead of following your average  vampire meets human love story, this undead series takes things to a whole new level. I'm so glad to have found a vampire based series that is unique and original. This third book drops us right back into the midst of Rose's chaotic life. Her romantic interest, Dimitri is melt-your-heart material. He and Rose are definitely one of the best YA couples out their, despite their age difference. Actually, the many barriers between their love is probably what makes their relationship so exciting. And, to make things even better, the love story gets a whole lot steamier in this one.

In the past two books, Lissa and Rose's deeply-bound friendship was one of my favorite aspects of series. However, Lissa annoyed me throughout this novel. She demands too much of Rose, and while she means well, she is too timid for my taste. Not to mention her whole "I'm the last Dragomir, so I need all this attention" type attitude. Gag. I was so proud of Rose when she finally snapped and told Lissa what she needed to hear. Rose never disappoints when it comes to speaking her mind and acting on her instincts.

Shadow Kiss is the best book in the series so far. Mead took the story down an unimaginable path. Seriously, I was sitting their screaming "WHAT???" as I read the last few chapters. Good thing I have the fourth book waiting for me on my nightstand right now. Otherwise, I may have panicked a teensy bit. Definitely pick this one up if your a fan of the series!
