This has to be one of the most difficult Top Ten topics I've done yet. I did the best I could, but there are still couples missing. Also, these are in no particular order.
Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace
“I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, then all at once.” - Hazel
Gus and Hazel share one of my all time favorite romances. Their relationship is much deeper than teenage angst and attraction. They are best friends turned lovers. They share a connection on a level much higher than most young adult relationships. I fell in love with them as they helped each other heal. Despite their battles with cancer, they live life to the fullest and embrace their love wholeheartedly.
Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen
“You love me. Real or not real?"
I tell him, "Real.” - Katniss to Peeta
Peeta and Katniss' love is one forged in a time of war and pain. It does not happen quickly. In fact, had the two of them never been chosen to compete in The Hunger Games, they would probably have never become friends. Their relationship started out shaky, formed solely to survive. Over time, though, it blossomed into so much more. They are each others' support systems. They survived together and therefore formed a bond no one else can fully understand.
Jace Wayland and Clary Fray
"There is no pretending," Jace said with absolute clarity. "I love you, and I will love you until I die, and if there is life after that, I'll love you then." - Jace
While the two previous romances I listed are based mostly on friendship, this love is more passion. Jace and Clary are both extremely sensitive, emotional characters. They act on impulse and are quick to anger and love. Despite the enormous obstacles the face, both Clary and Jace are able to overcome their differences in order to be with each other. Some of this may stem from selfish needs, but there is an element of true love and friendship beneath the fire of their chemistry.
Jared Howe and Melanie Stryder
“You and I won't lose each other, I will always find you again. No matter how well you hide. I'm unstoppable.” - Jared
Jared and Melanie's romance is one of the most passionate relationships I've read about. Although they met in desperate times, they did not end up together simply because they were lonely or confused. Their minds connected, and their hearts followed. Even when literally every odd turned against them, their love stayed true.
Edward Cullen and Bella Swan
"Before you, Bella, my life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars, points of light and reason. And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty." - Edward
Now, when I say that I love Edward and Bella's relationship, I don't mean the awkward, dark, and slightly pedophilic relationship displayed in the films. I mean the romance millions of readers around the world fell in love with. In the beginning, Bella was unnoticed. Ordinary. Then she met someone who lit a spark inside her and helped her to become the person she wanted to be. Yes, this person may have been a vampire who sparkles in the sunlight, but that doesn't change the fact that their romance was inspiring and often very beautiful (if a little dramatic).
Janie Hannagan and Cabel Strumheller
“Because with the right person, sometimes kissing feels like healing.” - Janie
It's been quite a while since I read this series, but I always remember Cabel's utter devotion to Janie and Janie's efforts to protect Cabel. They share experiences of passion and humor, friendship and love. I appreciated how easy their relationship was.
Chase Jennings and Ember Miller
“Ember, you're the only piece of me I have left. Everything else-my family, my home, my soul- they're all gone. I don't know who the hell I am anymore. If it weren't for you... I don't know.” - Chase
In their dystopian society, Chase and Ember have little to hold on to. Both have lost the people that mean the most to them. As they struggle to survive in their harsh world, they form a bond of trust and love. This bond helps them to remember what they treasure, even when the going gets rough. I love how much they depend on each other. Without love, they would have nothing.
Adam Kent and Juliette Ferrars
"You have no idea how much I've thought about you. How many times I've dreamt... how many times I've dreamt about being this close to you." He moves to run a hand through his hair before he changes his mind. Looks down. Looks up. "God, Juliette, I'd follow you anywhere. You're the only good thing left in this world.” - AdamWhile many of the romances I admire are based on friendship, Adam and Juliette's love is extremely passionate and fiery. Mixed in between their profound conversations and episodes of action/drama are moments of pure emotion. Their hearts are connected on so many levels.
Anna and Etienne St. Claire
“For the two of us, home isn't a place. It is a person. And we are finally home.” - Anna
Once again, this is a true friendship that blossoms into a beautiful relationship. These two complete each other. Their wit and deep connections would make any girl jealous. I love how healthy their love is. They are perfect for each other. Yes, they fight, but their personalities just click. It's utterly adorable.
Jay Heaton and Violet Ambrose
“He loved her.
Jay Heaton, her best friend since childhood was in love with her. He didn't say it but she knew that it was true.
And the part that really freaked her out, the part that caught her completely off guard, is that he wasn't alone. Because even though she'd been denying it for a long, long time, it had always been there... waiting beneath the surface of their friendship. And now that it was out there was no going back.
And it was so weird to even be thinking it but... she was in love with him too.” - Violet
Look at that. Jay and Violet fell for each other's personalities, not their attributes. This leads to a romance built on friendship and respect, not just passion (although that's there, too). Both are extremely protective each other. Their devotion is swoon-worthy to read about.
